"Spring Flowers"

As you can tell from reading my blog posts...I'm very slow in the production department. It seems to take me quite a long time to finish a piece of my artwork. Bear in mind that I enjoy it....so it could be that I am subconsciously making it 'last' by taking so long. It would never enter my mind to hurry and finish so I could make lots more! No, for me....well, this kind of work should never be hurried, which I guess is a good thing, since making a zillion French Knots does, by its very nature (and mine!) take a while. If you understand that...then you understand me. I don't know what that says about either of us!

Pictured here you see my latest piece of work. And, it DID take a while. Of course, first, I had to develop an idea, then paint the canvas, paint the quilt batting, embroider the quilt batting, stitch it to the canvas, embroider some more, blah, blah, blah. I almost never know when to stop, so eventually, I just say to myself..."OK....that's it." I think I tend to 'overdo,' never knowing when I'm well off. Sometimes I go just that one little step TOO far. Tell me what you think. Hopefully, my technique will improve as I make more. (I'm saying making more while my brain is saying 'you have a quilt to finish!' Nag, nag, nag. Sometimes I wish I didn't have to sleep!)

This is an 8" x 10" canvas. The quilt batting is Warm and Natural. I used DMC embroidery floss. Acrylic paints. I would like to make more of these at some point and, as always, will never make any two alike. Yes, I KNOW I promised to do a tutorial on how to make these...and I will, but it looks like I won't be able to do any of those until after our guild retreat in September...there's just too much I have to do to get my classes ready and, as always seems the case...I am behind on those. This 'embroidered painting' is now in Second Saturday Studio, and for sale. I don't expect it to go flying out the door....but you never know.

Someone reminded me the other day that last year (or the year before) was supposed to be my 'year' of the basket where I would show you lots of quilted, embroidered and crocheted baskets...what happened to that idea? Well, life happened. So....I suppose at some date in the not so distant future....I need to fulfill that commitment too. I have decided that our retreat this Fall will be the last classes I will be teaching. I'm not getting any younger and there's just so many things I'd like to make, see and do, so hopefully, things like tutorials on this blog will take the place of the classes. Only time will tell....but it sounds like a good idea to me.

So, tell me....do you like this little 'piece of work'? I'm thinking it has a bit of potential and, as always, I love showing YOU what I do. Hope you all have a lovely Memorial Day......take care out there, pat

Well I like it a lot, it's the piece of work I like the best of all the things you have shown over the last year and a half. This is a little lighter than some of your work I think and I like the textures and colours. In fact, I wish it was mine! But as it isn't I will just have to come back and look whenever I need a 'fix'. I can't make a picture slowly, silks need to be painted quickly to get the effects so once you start you can't stop until finished! I am not at all sure I would have your patience to do all those French knots!

I find this a very peaceful scene and would love to look at it daily. I would also like to try your technique, and am looking forward to your tutorial. I was delighted to hear that you work slowly and enjoy the process. I have been working that way, and have been feeling some pressure to produce more. Thanks for validating "enjoying the process."

Oh wow! I love your work! This is my first peak at your blog and I will be coming back for more. I know what you mean about needing to quit teaching so you can do your own thing more! After many candlewicking projects in the 1980's I actually love the little knots! It's beautiful and I love the colors. I would love to see a tutorial also!

It's just beautiful and so inspiring to look at.

Love all the little things you made using paper clay. I attempted to make some tags, but I think the stuff wasn't rolled out thin enough do achieve the look I wanted.

Have a great weekend; hope your toe is better.

I think it's gorgeous, I've never seen this technique before & I would like to try it.
I'm a slow worker too, I do procrastinate & I do take a lot of time to make decisions with projects, but even when I've made the choices & I'm working, I'm slow. Two reasons, now I've stopped to think about it, I'm a perfectionist, & I also enjoy the process & like to savour it. All these years I've felt guilty for being so slow but just reading your post I see it's just me & it's ok!!! The only time I do rush it to deadlines & that's just stressful.

I meant to leave a comment days ago. I usually read your blog posts on my phone, but I leave comments via my computer. Anyway, I love this piece. Wonderful texture and color. I like how it gives the impression that the observer is taking in a wider expanse of landscape and zeroing in on a specific area at the same time. Beautiful work, as always!
